Let's learn how to play Challengers!!

Tips:

• You can press the SPACE key to make the tutorial progress instead of using buttons.

• You can use    to minimize tutorial explanations if needed.

This tutorial exists thanks to: Nekonyancer

Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b8d9d3681.66307637.jpg[/img] From outer space aliens to deep-sea creatures, your dream team of improbable allies works toward a common goal: *to win the world's greatest Capture the Flag tournament!* [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn each round of *Challengers!*, you will add new cards to your deck, remove weak ones, and then go head-to-head against a different opponent! Winning rounds will attract *fans!* After seven rounds, the two players with the most fans will compete in the final. [green]Whoever wins the final round wins the game![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[red]BGA just announced the matchups![/red] Looks like our opponent is *nekonekoneko3.* This is a two-player game, so we'll be against them every round.3maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThis matchup announcement seems little redundant right now, but in a game with more people, it would look like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b8dbb34c4.67932544.jpg[/img] The players would play against a new opponent each round.5maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach round starts with a *Deck Phase.* During this phase, we'll prepare for our match by first *adding* 1 or 2 cards to our deck and then *removing* whichever cards we like. *Click on [blue]Begin Deck Phase[/blue] at the top.* *Then continue to the next box.*7maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerBGA is now showing us our available options for the Deck Phase. During Round 1, we only have one option: [blue]two cards from the A deck.[/blue] This will make more sense later, I promise. *Just click on [blue]Confirm[/blue] for now.*8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment010
Nekonyancer*Okay, the Deck Phase has begun!* You can think of this screen as a *locker room.* Along the bottom of the screen, we can examine [red]*all the cards in our deck.*[/red] [green][tip] Everyone always starts with the same six cards![/green]1deck-card-City-1-0648a95e4700f800deck-card-City-0-0 1 deck-card-City-0-1 1 deck-card-City-0-2 1 deck-card-City-1-0 1 deck-card-City-2-0 1 deck-card-City-3-0 1
NekonyancerAlong the top of the screen, we can examine [blue]*new recruits.*[/blue] We can pick up to two cards to add to our deck.2secret-card-2648a95e4700f800secret-card-0 2 secret-card-1 2 secret-card-2 2 secret-card-3 2 secret-card-4 2
NekonyancerEach card has four important bits of information: [blue]Base power.[/blue] [red]Set.[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b8dde2bb4.62729410.jpg[/img] [green]Effect text.[/green] *Card level.*3maintitlebar_content648a95e4700f800
NekonyancerThe only feature that isn't self-explanatory is the *card level.* In each Set, there are *Level-A, Level-B,* and *Level-C* cards. At the beginning of the game, all the *A* cards from each set were shuffled together to create the *A* deck. Ditto for B and C. Right now, we only have access to the *A* deck. Later, we'll get to draft more powerful cards from *B* and *C!*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a95e4700f800
NekonyancerSome cards, like the [blue]*Talent,*[/blue] are labeled as *rare.* That means there are only 3 copies of it in the deck. You may also encounter *common* cards, which have five or more copies. All unlabeled cards have 4 copies in the deck.5secret-card-2648a95e4700f800secret-card-2 7
NekonyancerLet's add the [blue]*Jester*[/blue] to our deck! It's a very strong card in the early game. *1.* Click on the [blue]*Jester.*[/blue] *2.* Click on "Confirm" at the top.6secret-card-1648a95e4700f810cha-confirm-button 18 secret-card-1 17
NekonyancerGreat, the [blue]*Jester*[/blue] is now on our team! We can add one more card to our deck... but I don't like any of the remaining cards. Fortunately, we can [red]*"Redraw"*[/red] to throw away the hand and get as many new cards as we threw away! *1.* Click on [red]*Redraw.*[/red] *2.* Click on [red]*Redraw*[/red] again.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a95fe3406010deck-card-Castle-0-0 7
NekonyancerHmm. Which card should we add? Well, the Jester works well when we have many "1" power cards in our deck. *Add the [red]"Clown"[/red] to our deck!*1secret-card-4648a96011090110secret-card-4 6
Nekonyancer*Great!* Now that we've added our two cards, we have the option to remove any number of cards from our deck. Mm... I don't think we want to remove anything just yet. *Click on [red]"Done"[/red] and then [red]"Confirm Deck"[/red] at the top!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a961e817f410
Nekonyancer[red]Time to start the Match Phase![/red] This is when all the 1-on-1 matches actually play out. Looks like we're going first! When it's your turn, all you have to do is reveal the top card of your deck. *Click on [blue]Reveal Top Card![/blue]*1cha-continue-button648a964980f9510
NekonyancerThe top card was the [red]*Clown,*[/red] which has a power level of *1.* When your card's power is *greater than or equal to* the opponent's power, you gain *flag possession!*1cha-revealed-0-0-0648a964cee55100cha-revealed-0-0-0 6
NekonyancerBy the way, did you read the Clown's [green]effect text?[/green] It says we gain 2 fans when it gains flag possession! Fans are represented by [red]*red stars.*[/red] As you can see, we now have 2 fans!2num-fans-11941354648a964cee55100num-fans-11941354 1
NekonyancerWhen you gain flag possession, your turn *immediately ends.* [blue]Now our opponent will try to get the flag back![/blue]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a964cee55100
NekonyancerThey played their top card - a [red]*newcomer*[/red] - which has power equal to our clown's! Now they have possession! When they gained possession, our Clown went to our [blue]*bench*[/blue] to watch the rest of the match.1cha-revealed-0-1-0648a96536a92000cha-bench-0-0-0-0 7 cha-revealed-0-1-0 6
Nekonyancer*Bench management* is very important. There's only room for 6 *unique* cards on the bench (identical cards can share a slot). If we try to send a 7th unique card to the bench, [red]we'll instantly lose the match![/red]2cha-bench-0-0-0-0648a96536a92000
NekonyancerSince our opponent gained possession, it's our turn again. *Reveal the top card!*3cha-continue-button648a96536a92010
NekonyancerGreat! We have possession again, and our opponent's newcomer went to their own bench.1cha-revealed-0-0-0648a9659aa01a00
NekonyancerAnd so on and so forth. *Play the next card!*1cha-continue-button648a965dac12910
NekonyancerHmm. This time we drew a [red]*Talent,*[/red] which has *2* power. That's not enough to beat our opponent's [blue]*Spider.*[/blue] He needs help! In cases like this, we will continue playing cards until the *total power* of our played cards is enough to gain possession.1cha-revealed-0-0-0648a9661f241400cha-revealed-0-1-0 7 cha-revealed-0-0-0 6
Nekonyancer*Reveal the next card!*2cha-continue-button648a9661f241410
NekonyancerIt's a [red]*dog,*[/red] with *3* power! Together with the Talent, they have *5* total power, which is enough to gain possession.1cha-revealed-0-0-1648a966365b1400cha-revealed-0-0-1 6
NekonyancerUnfortunately, even though two cards worked together to gain possession, [red]only our last card will maintain possession.[/red] That means our opponent only has to beat *3 power* to get the flag back - not *5!*2cha-revealed-0-0-1648a96636668100
NekonyancerOur opponent had to play [red]*two cards*[/red] to get the flag back. Now *both* of our fielded cards (Dog and Talent) will be sent to the bench!1cha-revealed-0-0-1648a96695eba400cha-revealed-0-1-0 6 cha-revealed-0-1-1 6
NekonyancerI think you get the idea now, so I'm skipping a few turns... Click on *"Continue"* once all the cards stop moving.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a96695f4ff00
NekonyancerI think you get the idea now, so I'm skipping a few turns... Click on "Continue" once all the cards stop moving.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a9686204a600cha-revealed-0-0-0 7
NekonyancerOoh, our last card was our [blue]*Jester.*[/blue] He has a base power of 1, but he gets +3 because we have at least one card on our bench with 1 base power, so his total power is 4!2cha-revealed-0-0-0648a9686204a600cha-revealed-0-0-0 7
NekonyancerOur opponent played their last card and didn't have enough power to get the flag back! [red]That means we win the match![/red]2cha-revealed-0-1-0648a968c51d0900
NekonyancerAnd with victory come the spoils - [red]a trophy and 2 fans![/red]3cha-revealed-0-0-0648a968c51d0900
NekonyancerTime for Round 2! *Click on [blue]"Begin Deck Phase"[/blue] and [blue]"Confirm."[/blue]*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a969a50ffa10
NekonyancerOoh, there's another [blue]*Jester*[/blue] available! Remember, identical cards can *share a slot* on the bench, so this is a great pick for us! *Take the [blue]Jester![/blue]*1secret-card-1648a96a08a97210secret-card-1 7
NekonyancerNext, let's take the [red]*Rescue Pod*[/red] - it will synergize with our jesters in the short term, and it will let us take a more powerful card later on. *Take the [red]Rescue Pod![/red]*1secret-card-0648a96a8cbee310secret-card-0 6
NekonyancerBut now we have a slight problem - there are seven different cards in our deck! Remember, if we need to put a 7th card on our bench, we'll immediately lose the round! To prevent that issue, let's get rid of a card. *1.* Select the [green]Talent.[/green] *2.* Click on [blue]"Remove 1 card(s)."[/blue] *3.* Click on [red]"Done."[/red] *4.* Click on [red]"Confirm Deck."[/red]1deck-card-City-2-0648a96cc17f0d10deck-card-City-1-0 8
Nekonyancer[red]*Time for Match 2!*[/red] There's nothing new to explain here, so I'll just skip through it...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a96f21bd5900
NekonyancerClick on *"Continue"* once all the cards stop moving...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a973ace8b600
Nekonyancer*Hah!* Our opponent ran out of space on their [red]*bench,*[/red] so they lost, even though they still had some cards left to play! As you can see on the trophy, this round's victory was worth *3* fans instead of *2.*2cha-bench-0-1-3-0648a973ace8b600
NekonyancerWe're almost done! Just one more thing to show you. *Click on [blue]"Begin Deck Phase."[/blue] Then continue to the next box.*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a97467fe5700
NekonyancerThis time, we have two different options for our Deck Phase! We can either take 2 cards from the *A Deck,* or 1 card from the more powerful *B Deck!* This choice was scheduled on our [blue]*Tournament plan.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed22823621.13164251.jpg[/img]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a97467fe5700tournament-card-small-11941354 7
NekonyancerTwo Level-A cards would probably synergize with our jesters better, but we should get a good look at some Level-B cards before the tutorial ends. *Select "B." Then click on [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] at the top!*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a97467fe5710cha-deck-choice-31 16
Nekonyancer[red]WOW, these are some strong cards![/red] And these are only the *Level-B cards!* The *Level-C cards* will be stronger still!1secret-card-2648a976ca7ad200
Nekonyancer*Okay, I think you've seen enough!* The game will continue for *seven* rounds. After that, the two players with the most fans will go head-to-head in a final round. [green]Whoever wins that last match wins the whole tournament![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a976ca7ad200
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Challengers!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *GTSchemer* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment648a976ca7ad200
