leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec3de94435.80650407.png[/img] *The Castles of Burgundy* is a game about building up your kingdom's domain by placing hexagonal tiles. At the start of each turn, each player will roll two D6 dice. This roll determines what that player is able to do with their turn.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
leafsnackThis is the *main board*. It contains six "numbered depots" of tiles, each one aligning with one of the six numbers on the die. This is where you will purchase hexes to place on your board.1ship_order_ctnr61481e0a0527e01
leafsnackThis is your *player board*. This is where you will place the hexes you take from the main board, building up your kingdom over time.2space_clickzone_88690205_2861481e0a0527e00
leafsnackEach player starts with a single Castle tile in the center of their player board. Whenever you place a tile, it must be adjacent to a tile you've already placed. This means that your first hex must be placed into one of the six spaces surrounding your Castle.4tile_clickzone_8261481e0a0587f00
leafsnackThese are your *storage spaces*. When you take hexes from the main board, they will move into one of these three spaces. When placing a hex into your estate, it must come from one of your storage spaces. This means you'll have to use one turn to take a hex, and another turn to place that hex.5space_88690205_storage_061481e0a0587f00space_88690205_storage_0 2 space_88690205_storage_1 2 space_88690205_storage_2 2
leafsnackLet's move on to how your first turn plays out. Our opponent is the starting player, so they will spend their two dice before we get to spend ours. There are two main actions you can perform using a die: - *Take* a hex to your storage - *Place* a hex from your storage When spending one of your die, [blue]you must choose an action whose # value matches the # value on your die.[/blue]6tile_clickzone_4861481e0a0587f00
leafsnackOur opponent used their [blue]6[/blue] to take a beige hex from the #6 depot, and their [green]5[/green] to take a yellow hex from the #5 depot.2tile_clickzone_4861481e0ca24e600space_mainboard_19 8 space_mainboard_21 7
leafsnackNow it's our turn. We have a [red]4[/red] and a [green]5[/green], so I think we should go with gaining the #4 beige tile and #5 Mine tile. First, click the [green]5[/green] die on our board, then click the action you want to spend it on. In this case, we want to take the [green]Mine[/green].3ship_order_ctnr61481e0ca24e610mbSpaceBg_17 8 die_88690205_2 3
leafsnackThen, do the same with the [blue]4[/blue] die and the [blue]Church[/blue] (the beige tile in #4).1ship_order_ctnr61481e13b5c6f11mbSpaceBg_14 7 die_88690205_1 2
leafsnackWe now have our mine and beige hexes in storage, which we can place in the future. Since all players in the game have used both of their dice, the turn is over. Hit [blue]"Confirm turn"[/blue] to advance to the next one.1tile_10161481e1657cdf10tile_clickzone_101 7 tile_clickzone_13 7
leafsnackTurn two has started and each player rolls their dice again. Our opponent rolled a [red]1[/red] and [red]5[/red], and we rolled a [blue]2[/blue] and [blue]5[/blue]. But before we continue, there's a few more things we need to cover.1tile_clickzone_4861481e18626dd01
leafsnackThis is the [red]*Central Depot*[/red]. It's a special depot of hexes that you can't spend your die #'s on. Instead, you pay for them using [blue]Silver[/blue]. On each of your turns, in addition to the two die you spend on taking actions, you may also [blue]*buy a tile*[/blue]. This means trading in [blue]2 Silver[/blue] to take any one of the four tiles in the center of the main board.2tile_9661481e18626dd00tile_48 1 mbSpaceBg_27 1 mbSpaceBg_28 1 mbSpaceBg_30 1 space_clickzone_88690205_15 15
leafsnackBut [blue]*Silver*[/blue] is a rare commodity. The two main ways to gain [blue]Silver[/blue] are by either: - Having Mine hexes on your board - Selling goods In addition to taking and placing hexes, which will make up most of your actions, you may spend your die on *selling a goods crate*. This means spending a die with the same # value as the one depicted on the [red]crate[/red].3goods_1061481e18626dd00goods_12 1 goods_2 1 goods_40 6 goods_33 6 goods_10 6
leafsnackTo *sell* a [red]goods crate[/red], first click on the die you want to spend and then click one of the three stacks of crates at the top of your player board that corresponds to that die number (1-6). Selling a stack of crates will give you [blue]+1 Silver[/blue]. In a 2/3/4-player game, you also receive +2/3/4vp for each crate sold (although still only [blue]+1 Silver[/blue] total).4goods_4061481e18626dd00goods_40 6 goods_33 6 goods_10 6
leafsnackThe last resource on your player board that we haven't covered is the *[green]Workers[/green]*. If there's an action you want to take using a die (whether it be taking, placing, or selling) but you just don't quite have the right number value to do so, you can spend a [green]Worker[/green] to "nudge" one of your dice by +1 or -1. *6*'s can be nudged to *1*'s, and vice versa.5takeWorkers_button_8869020561481e18626dd00takeWorkers_button_88690205 8
leafsnackThere is one final action that you're allowed to spend your dice on: [green]*Taking Workers*[/green]. No matter what # value is on the die you spend, you will receive [green]+2 Workers[/green] for doing so. [tip] It's always a good idea to keep at least one Worker around for when you really need it, so you should consider spending your die on taking workers if nothing else appeals to you.6possMove_wrap_depot_261481e18626dd01takeWorkers_button_88690205 8 die_88690205_2 3
leafsnackSo, to recap, on your turn you can spend your two die on any combination of these four actions: - *Take* a tile - *Place* a tile - *Sell* goods - Take [green]+2 Workers[/green] You may also *buy* a tile from the central depot for [blue]2 Silver[/blue].7goods_depot_161481e18626dd01
leafsnackOur opponent spent their [red]1[/red] on placing their Special hex onto the #1 yellow space on their board. (You may need to scroll down to see.)1die_90717317_261481e67457c800tile_clickzone_64 6 die_90717317_2 6
leafsnackOur opponent used their [red]5[/red] plus one of their [green]workers[/green] to ship their #4 crate. They receive [blue]+1 Silver[/blue] and +2vp for this action. [green](Spending the worker nudged the die from 5 to 4)[/green]2possMove_wrap_gdsStorage_90717317_161481e67459a200takeWorkers_button_90717317 3 goods_26 6 space_clickzone_90717317_15 15 die_90717317_1 6
leafsnackFinally, our opponent *buys* a tile from the [red]central depot[/red] by spending [blue]2 Silver[/blue], adding that tile to their storage. Now, it's our turn.3space_mainboard_2561481e6745a8900space_mainboard_25 1 tile_48 1
leafsnackI have an idea. Let's use our [blue]2[/blue] spending a [green]worker[/green], nudging it to a 3, to place our [red]beige Church tile[/blue] onto the northern #3 space on our board. *Click the die, tile, then space.* [green][The worker will be spent automatically upon choosing a die+action that would force you to consume it.][/green]4ship_order_ctnr61481e67485ba11tile_13 6 space_clickzone_88690205_11 6 die_88690205_1 1
leafsnack*The effect of the [red]Church[/red] is:* When played, take a Castle, Mine, or Special (yellow) tile to your storage. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec3e1d7ed8.67571120.png[/img] Now that we've placed our [red]Church[/red], let's take our bonus. Click the [green]Castle[/green] tile in the #2 depot.1tile_clickzone_9161481e7f49ff110tile_91 3
leafsnackFor our [blue]5[/blue], we are in a bit of a pickle. There are no hexes in the #5 depot that we could spend it on, nor are there any 5-value spaces on our board that we could place our Mine/Castle into. We could either spend another worker to nudge the value to either 4 or 6, but it's smart to be frugal. *Click* on the [blue]5[/blue], then on the [green]workers[/green] to take workers.1takeWorkers_button_8869020561481e8db310410space_mainboard_17 6 space_mainboard_19 6 takeWorkers_button_88690205 8 die_88690205_2 3
leafsnackNice job! Before we move on, let's go over what each of the hex colors does. *There are six terrain types in Burgundy:* - Dark Green (castles) - Grey (mines) - Light Green (animals) - Yellow (special) - Blue (ships) - Beige (city)2space_mainboard_2561481e9a3e99501
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec3e4e3c67.78393404.png[/img] When you place a *Castle* onto your board, you are allowed to take an action of any number value (1-6). This means that you may immediately take any tile from the board, or place any tile from your storage. Castles are some of the most prized hexes, and each player has only 3 dark green spaces on their board.3estSpaces_8869020561481e9a3e99501space_mainboard_6 2 mbSpaceBg_28 2
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec3e77b071.92782294.png[/img] *Mines* don't do anything when placed, but at the end of each round each player receives one [blue]Silver[/blue] for each Mine hex on their board. Mines, along with Castles, are among the most valuable hexes. Each player has 3 grey spaces for Mines.4estSpaces_8869020561481e9a3e99501space_mainboard_17 2
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec3e99e533.64025136.png[/img] *Animal* hexes give you victory points immediately when you place them. The amount of points you receive is equal to the number of animals depicted on the tile (a tile with 4 sheep is worth +4vp). Additionally, you also score each other animal hex of the same species that are in the same region as the one you just placed.5estSpaces_8869020561481e9a3e99501tile_139 2 tile_158 2 tile_142 2 tile_163 2
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec3ebafde2.32330674.png[/img] *Special* hexes each have a different picture on them, and each one has a unique effect. You can mouse over each one to see what it does. Generally, these tiles either give you victory points at the end of the game, or they give you a passive boost during the game. Each player has 6 yellow spaces on their board.7estSpaces_8869020561481e9a3e99501mbSpaceBg_4 2 space_mainboard_19 2
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec3ee2d2b7.21931247.png[/img] *Ships*, when placed onto your board, provide two benefits: - You take all of the [blue]*crates*[/blue] from one of the 6 depots on the mainboard. - You advance one space forwards on the [red]*turn order track*[/red]. The turn order is determined at the start of each turn by the order of the player markers on this track. On top = first.8estSpaces_8869020561481e9a3e99501pl_ship_order_90717317 1 pl_ship_order_88690205 1 tile_118 2 tile_127 2
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec3f126156.43134454.png[/img] Lastly, we have *City* tiles, the most common hexes in the game. There are eight different buildings you can place into your city regions, with each one bearing its own icon. You can mouse over any of these hexes to see what they do. Buildings give you an immediate effect when you place them onto your board, which varies based on their type.9estSpaces_8869020561481e9a3e99501tile_1 2 tile_2 2 space_mainboard_14 2 space_mainboard_21 2
leafsnackDon't worry if you didn't catch 100% of that. You can always hover over any tile and a tooltip will describe what the tile does. [green][If you have tooltips disabled, you can use the "Help" box in the bottom left of the main board instead.][/green] With the knowledge of the six different terrains, let's go ahead and fast-forward through the next three turns to reach the end of round A.11archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61481e9a3e99500help_mboard_ctnr 3
leafsnackWe've now reached the end of the first round. As you can see, we nearly picked the main board clean of hexes. At the end of each round, [green]all of the tiles on the main board are cleared and new ones are placed onto the empty spaces[/green]. The colors of the tiles in the depots will always be the same. *In a 2-player game:* 1 Castle, 1 Mine, 2 Special, 2 Animals, 2 Ships, & 4 City tiles.1estSpaces_88690205614820069d4ff01
leafsnack*Round B has begun*. New tiles have been dealt to the main board, and each player has received [blue]+1 Silver[/blue] for each Mine on their board. We're almost done with this tutorial. All that's left is how to score victory points and win the game.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment614820123ccf800
leafsnackMany of your points in The Castles of Burgundy will come from *completing regions*. This means filling in all of the spaces of a certain terrain type in a single contiguous group on your board. Once you have done so, you will receive victory points based on how large it was. [See table below] Each of the [red]highlighted groups[/red] on our player board is its own region. Even with just one tile!2help_mboard_title614820123e94000help_mboard_slide_0 1 space_clickzone_88690205_1 1 space_clickzone_88690205_2 1 tile_clickzone_91 1 tile_clickzone_13 2 tile_clickzone_101 7 space_clickzone_88690205_25 6 space_clickzone_88690205_26 6 space_clickzone_88690205_27 8 space_clickzone_88690205_29 7 space_clickzone_88690205_30 3 space_clickzone_88690205_31 6 space_clickzone_88690205_32 6 space_clickzone_88690205_33 7 space_clickzone_88690205_34 3 space_clickzone_88690205_35 3 space_clickzone_88690205_36 6
leafsnackWhen you complete a region, you will also receive points [green]based on what round of the game you are currently in[/green]. Regions completed in round A are worth an additional +10vp, while regions completed in round D are only worth +4vp. So upon completion of any region, you receive: [red]points from region size[/red] + [blue]points from which round it is[/blue]3ship_order_ctnr614820123e94001tile_4 15 possMove_wrap_depot_1 14 goods_depot_6 15 help_mboard_slide_0 6
leafsnackFinally, the first person to fill in [green]*all* of the tiles on their board of a certain color[/green] receives that terrain type's *medal*, which is worth a bonus +5vp at the end of the game. (The first person to fill in all 6 ship spaces takes [blue]the blue medal[/blue] and gets +5vp at game-end.)4bonTile_2614820123e94000bonTile_5 7 bonus_tiles_ctnr 3
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec3f41df38.13294154.png[/img] You are now prepared to play your first game of *The Castles of Burgundy*. Good luck!5tile_clickzone_0614820123e94001
