Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec910f9454.97531315.jpg[/img] Welcome to Can't Stop Express, an *abstract roll-and-write game* by Sid Sackson! What it lacks in theme, it makes up for in *[green]addictiveness![/green]* And also dice. Lots of dice. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerEvery turn, [red]these five dice[/red] will be rolled. Everyone will then split the five dice into two pairs (sets), with one die left over. The sums of the pairs will determine what boxes you fill in on your scoresheet! To get points, you'll have to fill in [blue]*many boxes in the same rows*[/blue] while leaving other rows *completely blank.*2dice1000
NekonyancerAll the different pairing possibilities are laid out for you in rows. For example, *[blue]this row[/blue]* will use *3+6=9* and *1+5=6* as the paired sets, with 2 as the leftover 5th die!4confirm_5000confirm_5 12
NekonyancerThis row uses [red]3+6=*9*[/red] and [red]2+5=*7*[/red], using 1 as the leftover 5th die. *Click on the checkmark to pick it!*5confirm_2010confirm_2 12
NekonyancerThe paired "set" numbers, *7* and *9*, let us check off a box in the *7 row* and a box in the *9 row!*1x_11941354_9_16279693992fdf00x_11941354_9_1 2 x_11941354_7_1 2
NekonyancerAnd since we had a leftover die of *1*, we wrote *1* into this slot here and crossed off a box.2value5th_11941354_16279693992fdf00value5th_11941354_1 1
NekonyancerLet's take [blue]*this row*[/blue] next! It uses [red]3+6=9[/red] and [red]1+4=5[/red], with *6* as the leftover 5th die. *Click on the checkmark to take it!*1confirm_86279694038c1210confirm_8 12 dicelabel_8_1 12
NekonyancerGreat! We crossed off a [red]*box in the 5 row*[/red] and a [blue]*second box in the 9 row.*[/blue] 1x_11941354_9_262796946676d500x_11941354_9_2 2 x_11941354_5_1 1
NekonyancerSince we had 6 as our *5th die,* we wrote in *6* here and crossed off a box.2x5th_11941354_2_162796946676d500value5th_11941354_2 12
NekonyancerNow that we understand how a turn works, let's learn about how *scoring* works. First, note the [red]*-200s* [/red]in our *5, 7, and 9 rows.* [green][tip] Whenever you put an X into a fresh row, you get a penalty of 200![/green] There's a total of [blue]*-600*[/blue] at the bottom.3confirm_462796946676d501scoreminusvalue_11941354_7 1 scoretotalminusvalue_11941354 2 scoreminusvalue_11941354_9 1 scoreminusvalue_11941354_5 1
NekonyancerIn order to get rid of a row's *-200* penalty, we'll have to cross out [blue]*five boxes in that row,*[/blue] the last one going in that central column!4scoretotalvalue_1194135462796946676d501mark_11941354_5_2 2 mark_11941354_5_3 2 mark_11941354_5_4 2 mark_11941354_5_5 2 mark_11941354_7_2 2 mark_11941354_7_3 2 mark_11941354_7_4 2 mark_11941354_7_5 2 mark_11941354_9_3 2 mark_11941354_9_4 2 mark_11941354_9_5 2 x_11941354_9_1 2 x_11941354_7_1 2 x_11941354_9_2 2 x_11941354_5_1 2
Nekonyancer[red]*We'll want to get even more than 5 boxes though!*[/red] For every box after the fifth, we'll get the amount of points shown in the *A column.* For example, if we cross off 7 boxes in the 9 column, we'll get 100 points. *[blue]The first 5[/blue]* nullify the -200 penalty. *[green]The last two[/green]* grant us *50* points each!5scoretotalvalue_1194135462796946676d501mark_11941354_9_3 2 mark_11941354_9_4 2 mark_11941354_9_5 2 mark_11941354_9_6 3 mark_11941354_9_7 3 x_11941354_9_1 2 x_11941354_9_2 2
NekonyancerLet's take this row next. It will start our *6* and *8* rows and put *4* in our *[red]last 5th die slot![/red]* *Click here!*1confirm_26279694bc9c4310value5th_11941354_3 1 confirm_2 12
NekonyancerOkay! Now that all our [red]*5th die slots*[/red] are filled, our choices for dice pairings are *restricted!* From now on, any dice combination we pick *must* use *1, 6,* or *4* as the fifth die! All other combinations have been *omitted* from the list!1x5th_11941354_3_16279694dc678100value5th_11941354_1 1 value5th_11941354_2 1 value5th_11941354_3 1
NekonyancerLet's take *[blue]this combination*[/blue] next! It will open the *4* row, unfortunately, but it will also advance our *5* row. *Click here!*2confirm_16279694dc678110confirm_1 12
NekonyancerSince that combination used 1 as the fifth die, we crossed off [blue]*another box here[/blue].*1x5th_11941354_1_262796958daea600x5th_11941354_1_2 2
NekonyancerThe 5th die tracks function as a sort of *timeline* for the game. If you fill up *ANY* of [blue]the three rows[/blue] completely, you will have to *stop playing* and *lock in your final score!* [green][tip] It's a good idea to spread your Xs as evenly as possible among your three "5th die" numbers![/green]2x5th_11941354_1_262796958daea600value5th_11941354_1 2 value5th_11941354_2 2 value5th_11941354_3 2
NekonyancerSometimes though, you'll get really lucky and get a roll like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec9133cea0.67545907.jpg[/img] Our 5th die numbers are 1, 4, and 6, but this roll is all 2s, 3s, and 5s! In these situations, you can pick any combination you like! You can cross off scoring boxes, but *you don't have to cross off a 5th die box!* :D3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62796958daea600
Nekonyancer[green]Here's a fun fact for you![/green] [tip] You have a [green]*3.125% chance*[/green] on each roll of NOT rolling any of your 5th die numbers! [tip]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62796958daea600
NekonyancerAt the end of the game, your scorecard will look a little like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec91662084.00862891.jpg[/img] In this example, the player used *[blue]4 as their 5th die[/blue]* one too many times and had to lock in their final score. They missed out on a couple turns, but 280 ain't a bad score!5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62796958daea600
NekonyancerIf you have bad luck and end up triggering too many -200 penalties, you may end up with a *negative score* at the end of the game. [blue]*Don't get discouraged! It happens sometimes![/blue]* :)6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62796958daea600
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Can't Stop Express!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send me, *Nekonyancer*, a message! And don't forget to thank *Stefano* for bringing such a great game to BGA! *Have fun!* :D7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62796958daea600
