NekonyancerIn *Apiary,* each player controls 1 of 20 unique factions. A worker-placement, hive-building challenge awaits you: explore planets, gather resources, develop technologies, and create carvings to demonstrate your faction’s strength.2maintitlebar_content

NekonyancerPlayers will spend most of their turns placing workers on the board. However, each one can only be used a few times before they have to *hibernate!* When enough workers have entered the *Hibernation Comb* (8 in a 2-player game), the end of the game is triggered. NekonyancerWhen the QueenShip moves to a space for the *first time,* the player must... • Claim the Exploration token on the space. • Draw a random Planet tile. • Choose a basic resource in the supply and place it on the planet. • Gain resources. NekonyancerOur opponent chose to move the QueenShip up one space. They took the *Exploration token* (yellow disc) from the space they landed on. NekonyancerEach tile has a *cost* at the bottom, some sort of *ability or effect* at the top, and a *victory point value* on the left. For example, the Caretaker Recruit costs 2 Pollen, gives us 2 resources whenever we Hibernate, and is worth 1 point at the end of the game. Nekonyancer[green]*Farms*[/green] always cost Fiber and/or Water. They grant income whenever we use a Retrieve action and have extra inventory slots on them. [blue]*Recruits*[/blue] always cost Pollen and have effects that activate whenever specific actions are taken. [red]*Developments*[/red] always cost Wax and provide powerful instant effects. Nekonyancer[green]Our opponent just placed their Strength-2 worker on the top Advance space.[/green] The *Advance* spaces are similar to the *Explore* spaces in that the effect depends on the *combined strength* of the workers in both spaces. They're occupied by our [red]*Faction*[/red] tile, which contains our starting inventory slots and explains our Faction's special ability. NekonyancerBefore we move on, let's take a quick look at our opponent's Hive. *Scroll down,* past our own Hive, until you find it.3ap-queens-favor-track

NekonyancerAs you can see, our opponent's Hive is a completely different shape and provides different bonuses. Their Faction tile gives them extra victory points for placing *Carve* tiles adjacent to it. [green][tip] Carve tiles cost precious Honey and are worth lots of points. If we place it in the *Landing Area,* it will wait there until we take a *Retrieve* action. NekonyancerBut right now, let's learn about the *RESEARCH* action space, which is located under the GROW space. *Find the Research action space. Place our Strength-2 worker on it!*2jj-custom-controls

Nekonyancer*Good!* When a player places a worker here, they can draw a number of *Seed cards* equal to the strength of the worker. In this case, we'll draw 2 cards. Nekonyancer[blue]Each Seed card can be used in 2 ways.[/blue] *1.* At the beginning or end of our turn, we can play a card to trigger the effect written along the top of the card. If we prefer, we can instead gain a basic resource of our choice.2ap-seed-card-3-front

NekonyancerFor instance, the right card in our hand can be discarded to gain 2 resources, but our opponent will gain 1 as well. The card on the left allows us to pay resources to *Upgrade* our faction. Since we already upgraded, that's not very useful! Alternatively, either card can be used to gain 1 resource. Nekonyancer*2.* When we use a Strength-4 worker, we may *plant* a Seed card from our hand. Planted cards will give us points at the end of the game, according to the condition shown along the *bottom* of the card.4ap-seed-card-3-front

NekonyancerEach player is limited to two planted Seed cards. However, the first two times they gain a *Frame* (expanding their Hive), they unlock another slot, up to a maximum of four slots. NekonyancerThe right card we drew grants 2 points per *Exploration token* we've claimed. That's not too bad. The one on the left simply grants 3 points.6ap-seed-card-3-front

NekonyancerOkay, we completed our main action for the turn. As you can see, we now have the option to play the Seed card, either to gain a resource or trigger its One-time benefit. Their strength levels are currently *1/2/2/2,* so we'll end up with *2/3/3/3.* Then we'll gain income from up to four different [green]*Farms.*[/green] Unfortunately, we only have three right now. NekonyancerNext, if you scroll down to the bottom of the main board, you'll find the [red]*Hibernation Comb.*[/red] The Comb is divided into two sectors (more with more players), and each sector is filled with individual pods. Each pod has some sort of bonus on it.1jj-custom-controls

NekonyancerWhen a worker is forced into Hibernation, its owner must select a pod to place it in. They'll then gain the indicated bonus.2ap-hibernation-comb-area

NekonyancerOur opponent selected the pod with 1 Wax on it. Good for them. The large sector of pods has two [red]*victory point values*[/red] under it - 7 and 2. At the end of the game, the player with the *most/2nd* most workers in this section will earn *7/2* points! NekonyancerBy the way, if you don't keep track of your Hibernations, you may find yourself in a situation where you have *no* workers to place or retrieve. In rare cases, the end can also be triggered by one player sending their *7th* and final worker to the Hibernation Comb.
