Convert, Energy, Upgrade, Archive, gain 1 victory point token(s)
- in the Upgrade example, spaces after the commas seem to be missing.
- the circle-i information symbol doesn't work on macOS or iOS.
please don't use the same string as both verb and noun.
while File, Pick, Build, Research works well grammatically in English, in many other languages they are different depending on whether they're used as a verb (to File) or a noun (a File).
here, {trigger} is a verb: "When you ${trigger} a ${color}${space}${object}: ${action}" (File, Pick, Build)
here, {built_from} is a noun: "${player_name} ${action} a Level ${level} ${color} Gizmo from ${built_from}" (File, Research)
ok, it's possibly just File that is used as both verb and noun, that I have found. there might be other uses?
please add another "File" string, and indicate in the context if it's verb or noun.
perhaps you can't add strings with exact same characters? I would suggest adding "file", "pick", "build" (in lower case) as verbs for the "When you…" string.
I will split the verb "file" from the noun "archive" since that's consistent with the rules of the game
this is sadly not in the same verb form as in "When you File a…".
in Swedish, for example, the button "File" translates to "Arkivera"
but "When you File…" translates to "När du Arkiverar…".
status row: [player] may pick an available energy from the row
status row: [player] may pick a second energy or cancel to skip
log: [player] Builds their 16th Gizmo
log: LAST ROUND
and, at a guess:
log: ${player_name} Builds their 4th Level III Gizmo
this one is not in the translation system:
banner: This is the last round!
But I don't see any new strings in the translation system. And the strings
gain ${n} victory point token(s)
Convert ${number} ${from} energy to ${to} energy
are not visible in the game.
for example, in the string
"${player_name} ${action} a Level ${level} ${color} Gizmo from ${built_from}${gizmo_html}", ${built_from} is a noun.
when ${built_from} = Research, this references the same "Research" string as in "${you} may ${html_file}, ${html_pick}, Build, or ${html_research}", where it is used as a verb.
the string "When you ${trigger} a ${color}${space}${object}: ${action}" (on cards) is problematic.
${trigger} is a different verb form compared to ${action}. For example, Pick in "When you Pick a yellow Energy: Draw" is different from Pick in "When you Build a yellow Gizmo: Pick".
this is a bit hard to explain, but trust me, in many languages, they are different.
a solution might be to use 3 different strings, where ${trigger} is written out, instead:
"When you Pick a ${color}${space}${object}: ${action}"
"When you Build a ${color}${space}${object}: ${action}"
"When you File a ${color}${space}${object}: ${action}"
(i don't think there's a "When you Research…" card, right?)
maybe this is a lot of work, i'm sorry.
"{trigger} a ${color}${space}${object}: ${action}"
And then there are new translations for "When you Pick", "When you Build", etc.
@kolofardos are you saying that I also need separate translations for "red gizmo" vs "red energy" because gizmo is masculine whereas energy is feminine? Do other games follow a similar pattern or do players just accept that adjective genders may be wrong? Probably varies I suppose
1) Draw up to 3 times
2) Refactored the trigger tooltip format to be more friendly to other languages
3) Added image of color energy instead of listing the actual color - this should also play more nicely with other languages especially those with gendered adjectives as now all colors only describe "Gizmos"
Sorry to the translators who now need to translate a few additional strings where this wasn't an issue
Right, gizmo and energy is different gender (to be precise gizmo is neutral gender while energy is feminine). In other games I evolved there were much more strings to translate; that helped to use the appropriate gender and clause for each case
I'd really want to change the color names used in material cards but keep the existing color name in the "Build" button. Also feel that written text is still more colorblind friendly than the icon change with this recent update.
My intention is to lean into using the energy images as much as possible e.g. on the Build button too - much better in terms of space usage and translations
I don't have any better suggestions on solving this than just adding extra "any" string there and let translators pick the right one by trial and error.
Lack of per color images for gizmo building is still an issue here. It's still indicated on written text instead of image.
