Agree that this could be improved further, which is why I'll leave this bug open and potentially revisit this later.
The default view should match the real game (which is equally difficult for colourblind people), but we want everyone to be able to play.
How about a UI button below the board that tints all the orange ships so they are distinguishable for colourblind people?

This option seems to carry over between Quantum tables, so that will hopefully be helpful and convenient.
I wouldn't call this an ideal solution, but it should hopefully be workable. If there are other improvements that you'd like, please open new individual bug reports for them.
