Ever-mischievious *Monkey* has challenged the *Wiseman* to a battle of wits for the keys to the temple! Can the Wiseman defend his title and put Monkey in his place?
[green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerIn *Sensei,* the two players - *Monkey* and the *Wiseman* - will take turns maneuvering stepping stones into place and hopping from stone to stone.
[blue]The first player to set foot on their opponent's home row is the winner![/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerWe'll play as the *Wiseman* for this tutorial.
He's the guy on the bottom row. I know - it's so hard to tell. :)3character_92143487000
NekonyancerOn their turn, players must do [blue]at least 1, but potentially all, of 3 things:[/blue]
*- Move a stone.*
*- Move a stone again.* This may be the same stone.
*- Move their character.* (Monkey or Wiseman.)4character_92143487000
NekonyancerWhen you move a stone, you can move *as far as you like* horizontally or vertically, unless blocked by something.
Let's try it!
*1. Select this stone.*
*2. Move it to the indicated location.*5square_1_2011square_5_2 18 stone_5_0 17
Nekonyancer[blue]Great![/blue]
*Next, move this one to the indicated space!*1stone_2_0635ddb7eaf5da10square_2_5 18 stone_2_0 17
NekonyancerGood!
Next, let's learn about *character movement.*
[blue]Monkey and the Wiseman can hop between two stones IF:[/blue]
*- Both stones belong to them.*
*- The stones are along the same horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line.*
*- There are no opponent's stones between them.*
[green]It doesn't matter if there's empty space between the two stones![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddb810cc7b00
NekonyancerLet's try it!
*1. Select the Wiseman.*
*2. Hop to this stone!*2character_92143487635ddb810cc7b10stone_5_2 18 character_92143487 17
Nekonyancer*Okay!* We moved a stone, moved another stone, and moved our character.
That's everything we can possibly do on our turn.
*Click on [red]"End turn"[/red] at the top!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddb834cac810validateturn 6
NekonyancerBefore our next turn, I want to mention [red]*the pits.*[/red]
Players cannot move their stones through them, but characters can still hop across them, just like any other square.1square_3_3635ddba26c5d600square_6_3 6 square_3_3 6 square_0_3 6
NekonyancerIt looks like Monkey is planning to hop diagonally to [blue]*this stone over here.*[/blue] [red]*The pit*[/red] does not impede Monkey's movement... but our stones can!2stone_1_1635ddba26c5d600square_3_3 6 stone_1_1 7
NekonyancerTo block him, let's *first select this stone (1).* Note that the pit in the middle is blocking some of its movement.
*Now move the stone to this square (2).*3stone_3_6635ddba26c5d611square_3_2 18 stone_3_0 17
Nekonyancer*Now move the stone again so that it blocks Monkey's diagonal movement!*
You can figure out where it should go, right?1stone_2_6635ddbaa8201111
Nekonyancer[red]Take that, Monkey![/red]
Lastly, we haven't moved our character yet this turn.
*Move the Wiseman to the indicated spot.*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddbac85ade10stone_2_5 18 character_92143487 17
Nekonyancer[red]Yikes! Monkey found another way around our blockade![/red]
Remember, to win, all he has to do is set foot on [blue]*our home row.*[/blue] He's really close now!1character_11941354635ddbc3a648400stone_6_0 7 square_5_0 7 stone_4_0 7 square_3_0 7 square_2_0 7 stone_1_0 7 stone_0_0 7
NekonyancerWe need to block him.
*First, select this stone and move it to the left.*2stone_4_0635ddbc3a648410square_5_0 18 stone_4_0 17
Nekonyancer*Next, let's move this stone two spaces to the left.*1stone_2_2635ddbc99423b10square_4_2 18 stone_2_2 17
NekonyancerGood. Now we can...
*Hey, wait a second. Do you see what I see?*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddbdb923b700
Nekonyancer[blue]Monkey left himself wide open![/blue]
Hmph! Reckless, as always.
We don't have to settle for blocking this turn. *We can win!*2square_1_6635ddbdb923b700square_1_6 7 stone_1_0 7
Nekonyancer*First, click on [red]Restart turn.[/red]*3undoturn635ddbdb923b710undoturn 6
Nekonyancer*Now move this stone all the way up to the top!*1stone_1_0635ddbe10558610square_1_6 18 stone_1_0 17
NekonyancerAnd finally, *move the Wiseman onto Monkey's home row.*
Don't forget to taunt him mercilessly as you do so!1character_92143487635ddbe4a608d10stone_1_6 18 character_92143487 17
Nekonyancer[green]*We won!*[/green]
There's just a couple more things I need to mention.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddbec1356300
NekonyancerFirst of all, you can make an impassable line with your stones (and possibly pits) that stretches all the way across the board, but that's no fun for anyone.
Luckily, there's the "Unfair" rule: [blue]if the other player three stones in contact with the line after making a move, they'll win by default![/blue]
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___x2.boardgamearena.net_data_tutorials_https___x.boardgamearena.net_data_tutorials_https___snipboard.io_0MgDBm.jpg[/img]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddbec1356300
NekonyancerSecond, did you notice that there were *no pits* in that picture?
That's because it was a picture of a *standard* board, which is actually the default setting. This tutorial was made in *Expert mode,* with pits. You can toggle between them in the lobby options!3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddbec1356300
NekonyancerFinally, this tutorial was made with the default *"Arashi"* version of the game.
There's also a *"Shizukana"* version, in which [blue]stones can only move one square at a time.[/blue]
You can't play expert mode (with pits) in the Shizukana version, but there's a variant, in which two of each player's stones start in the opponent's home row, like so:
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___x2.boardgamearena.net_data_tutorials_https___x.boardgamearena.net_data_tutorials_https___snipboard.io_1v5ny3.jpg[/img]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddbec1356300
Nekonyancer[blue]In other words, you can enjoy this game 4 different ways...[/blue]
*- Arashi, standard.* (Stones can move far, no pits.)
*- Arashi, expert.* (Stones can move far, pits.)
*- Shizukana.* (Stones move 1 space)
*- Shizukana variant.* (Stones move 1 space, some stones are swapped.)5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddbec1356300
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Sensei!*[/blue]
If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message!
A big thank you goes out to *tchobello, SwHawk,* and *Badguizmo* for bringing this game to BGA!
Have fun! :D6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ddbec1356300
